Student exchange

Exchange students are students participating in a formal exchange programme between their home university and the University of Zagreb (i.e. Erasmus+, Bilateral agreementsCEEPUS, etc.).

General information on international exchange programmes is provided in the Life at FER section.

Erasmus+ is the largest EU programme for education, training, youth and sport, and it covers the period between 2014 and 2020. The programme focuses on improving knowledge, skills and employability of European citizens, as well as improving the education, training and work in the field of youth and sports.

Erasmus+ student exchange

Exchange students temporarily live in Zagreb and attend courses or are involved in other academic activities at the University of Zagreb.

The exchange period usually lasts 1 semester (normally 30 ECTS) and maximum 1 academic year (normally 60 ECTS). The exchange student does NOT get a diploma from University of Zagreb. However, all academic results will be sent to student's home university. The student pays tuition fee at his/her home university, not at the host university.

Exchange students need the approval of their home and host university – at the time of the mobility they need to present a learning agreement signed by both universities, which is a guarantee for academic recognition of those courses afterwards. ECTS Coordinators establish agreements with foreign universities and provide detailed information on partner universities (which they generally know personally). ECTS Coordinators also help students to draw up and edit learning agreements they will follow during their period at the host university. When students return to the home university, they can contact their ECTS Coordinator for help with acquiring recognition for the exams they took at the partner university.

Before you apply

At least two semesters prior to the date you wish to begin a study abroad programme, define your goals and begin searching programmes that will best suit you.

You can begin by visiting the international exchange office of your university.

There you will have access to a variety of reference materials about FER. When you make your search, you can collect information on:

  • application deadlines;
  • whether you meet the eligibility and admission requirements;
  • costs;
  • campus accommodation;
  • other services, such as social activities, provided by the organization running the programme or by the host educational institution;
  • language proficiency (language of instruction at FER is in English).
