Papers presented at the 10th...

Lea Skorin-Kapov, Mirko Sužnjević, and Irena Oršolić participated in the 10th International Conference on Quality of Multimedia Experience (QoMEX 2018), and the collocated QoE Management Workshop in Sardinia, Italy. In the main conference, Irena presented results of recent research efforts on YouTube QoE classification from encrypted traffic, and Mirko presented a poster on subjective assessment of different locomotion techniques in virtual reality environments. Lea presented a paper on emerging aspects in QoE modeling and their impact on QoE management in the QoE management workshop.

Irena Oršolić took part in the Summer School on "QoE management and implementation" organized by the EU H2020 QoE-Net at École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland. The focus of the school was on developing approaches for QoE control and management schemes, allowing the participants to acquire skills on the development and implementation of QoE adaptation and control mechanisms and methods to evaluate the performance of QoE management schemes in real testbeds.

Paper presented at the first...

Irena Oršolić presented a paper co-authored with Lea Skorin-Kapov and Mirko Sužnjević about their ongoing research efforts aimed at investigating solutions for estimating end user QoE when watching YouTube videos, based solely on the analysis of encrypted traffic in mobile and WiFi networks. The paper discusses future work in the direction of developing a more general framework for the estimation of video streaming QoE. This work also received funding from Ericsson Nikola Tesla in Zagreb, Croatia.

Mirko Suznjevic held two seminars entitled: "Networking aspects of delay sensitive interactive applications" and "Networking aspects of delay sensitive interactive applications" at the University of Padova. The seminars were held within the course Wireless networks on the invite of assoc. prof. Claudio Palazzi.

Lea Skorin-Kapov presented a joint paper co-authored with Irena Oršolić, Dario Pevec, and Mirko Sužnjević on monitoring YouTube QoE based on the analysis of encrypted network traffic using a machine learning approach. The paper presents a system called YouQ which includes tools for monitoring and analysis of application-layer KPIs and corresponding traffic traces, and the subsequent use of this data for the development of machine learning models for QoE estimation based on traffic features. This work also received funding from Ericsson Nikola Tesla in Zagreb, Croatia.

A paper on cloud gaming QoE models...

Ivan Slivar presented a paper entitled: "Cloud Gaming QoE Models for Deriving Video Encoding
Adaptation Strategies
" at the ACM Multimedia Systems 2016 Conference (MMSys 2016) held in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, Austria.

The paper presents the results of a subjective laboratory study involving 52 players and two different games aimed at identifying QoE-driven video encoding adaptation strategies. Empirical results are used to derive analytical QoE estimation models as functions of bitrate and framerate, while also taking into account game type and player skill. Results have shown that under certain identified bandwidth conditions, reductions of framerate lead to QoE improvements due to improved graphics quality.
