Invitation to the lectures held by...

The Department of Energy and Power Systems (FER) invites you to the following lectures:

  1. System Identification and Passive Networks: A tool for Modelling Power Transformers,
  2. 500 kV GIS VT Modelling for Internal Transient Overvoltage Studies,

which will be held by Gustavo Henrique da Costa Oliveira, associate professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Federal University of Parana (UFPR). The lectures are held as a part of the Erasmus+ program, according to which Assoc Prof. Gustavo Henrique da Costa Oliveira is a guest lecturer at the Department of Energy and Power Systems (FER) – host is Assist. Prof. Božidar Filipović-Grčić, PhD. Both lectures will be held in Siva Vijećnica at FER on Thursday, 7 July 2022, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

The total duration of both lectures is 90 minutes and will be held in English. Everyone interested can attend, and we especially invite students (undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, post-doctoral) and colleagues from the industry who are dealing with power and instrument transformers.

1) System Identification and Passive Networks: A tool for Modelling Power

Time-domain simulation tools for studying transient behavior of electrical networks have been constantly improved in both scope and capabilities. Some examples of such computer-aided tools include the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP), Alternative Transients Program (ATP), and PSCAD. These software packages have long underpinned decisions ranging from the system design phase to everyday operational occurrences. It also subsides design choices concerning insulation design and coordination, as well as security measures, contingency plans, and locating potential sources of failures. Indeed, time-domain electromagnetic transient simulations can provide an important understanding of and insights into power system dynamics, as long as it has been correctly parameterized. System identification-based modeling, also known as black-box modeling, plays a relevant role in this context, as a tool to obtain reliable simulations. This presentation contains a comprehensive description of the procedure, from measurement to implementation, for deriving passive black-box transformer models for power systems EMT simulations.

2) 500 kV GIS VT Modelling for Internal Transient Overvoltage Studies

A few years ago, failures on inductive voltage transformers (VT) motivated an analysis of electromagnetic transient interactions between the gas-insulated substations (GIS) and the equipment. The usual approach to modeling VT consists of using a capacitive element. However, this approach is unable to reproduce characteristic resonances and predict how transients propagate internally and to the VT's secondary winding. Multiport black-box passive rational models built upon frequency-domain measurements are instrumental in overcoming these challenges. Starting with a GIS short overview, the presentation is separated into two main parts: (a) the first part contains a description of how S-Parameters have been used to consistently expand the measurement frequency range up to 50MHz and to derive a 2-Port VT model for simulating VFTO at the 500 kV GIS, (b) the second part presents the computation of the internal layers' overvoltages due to transients at the VT's high voltage terminal. The possible cause of the original failures is discussed at the end.


Prof. Gustavo Henrique da Costa Oliveira was born in 1967 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He received his B.E. and M.Sc degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, Brazil, and from the State University of Campinas, Brazil, in 1992. He received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the State University of Campinas, Brazil, and from Nice Sophia-Antipolis University, France, in 1997. He is currently an Associate Professor within the Electrical Engineering Department of the Federal University of Paraná, Brazil. His research activities include System Identification (time and frequency domain) and Passive Networks; System Identification in Dynamic Networks; Transformer Modelling; Power Systems Mode Estimation and Control.
