Short description of project

A prototype of a mobile robot should be developed and constructed for use in fire fighting units for exploration of buildings in case of fire, earthquake or other disaster. The aim of the robot is to explore unknown buildings, detect various sources of danger (explosive gases, various obstacles etc.), and locate people possibly hurt in the accident before the firemen start their intervention, and thus increase their protection when the suspicion of potentially dangerous conditions exists. For this purpose, a robot must be equipped with different sensors like cameras, thermovision cameras, temperature sensors, detectors of explosive gases and so on). An option is to provide the possibility of sensors replacement depending on the area of application. All information from the robot should be transferred wirelessly to the command place outside the building. The robot must have good maneuverability, and an operational interval between two recharging dockings must be long enough to be able to finish the exploration of dangerous area. Robot motor drives must ensure lively motion and the robot must have a capability of conquering the obstacles, as well as climbing the steps. An audio connection betwen the command place and the robot must enable the communication between the commander and the people to be saved. The project has a goal to engage experts from Croatian industry and academia to aquire „know-how“ and master new technology to be able to create a new and concurrent „Made in Croatia“ product. The exploration robot for firefighting units would present a basis for further development and improvement of professional service robotics area in Croatia.
