Short description of project
The theory of autonomy-oriented computing (AOC) is still at an early stage of development (J. Liu, 2005). The theory presupposes the existence of a multitude of computing entities exhibiting the following properties: autonomy, emergence, self-organisation, and adaptability. In the original AOC theory, the entities comprising the AOC structures resemble simple reactive agents. The purpose of AOC structures is that of solving hard computation problems and the modelling of complex systems using a bottom-up approach. Complex computational problems (e.g. those in the field of computer vision, knowledge representation, and crisp and fuzzy reasoning in intelligent systems, multisensor multimodal biometric systems for identification/verification) by their very nature require hierarchical structures of autonomously-oriented heterogeneous computing entities. These entities, depending on their place in the hierarchy, are endowed with different behavioural and cognitive competencies.
