ŠUZA - "From school to science and the academic community"

The popularization of science program “ŠUZA – from school to science and the academic community” is the new official popularization of science program of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER). The Program is intended for primary and secondary education students and their teachers. Through visits to schools, educational workshops for teachers and events at the Faculty their interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields is encouraged.

FER’s partners in this Program are the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.) and the student association eSTUDENT. The program is developed in cooperation and with the support of the Education and Teacher Training Agency (AZOO) and the Agency for Vocational Education and Training and Adult Education (ASOO).


On Thursday, 18th April 2013, the State Student Works Fair in Educational Sector Electrical Engineering and Computing was held for the first time at FER. At the Fair 34 students and student teams from 28 technical and vocational high school publicly presented their works in FER's Laptop Alley.

The Fair drew attention from numereous interested visitors. A special interest for the works was expressed by many FER professors, assistents and students, showing students that their works are meaningful and interesting to experts in the field.

Due to the interest by the professional public and the great interest in their works, students, their mentors and the Agency for Vocational Education and Training and Adult Education deemed this year's fair as very sucessful.

The State Student Works Fair in Educational Sector Electrical Engineering and Computing for the school year 2012/2013 started with a formal opening ceremony at 9 o'clock in FER's Grey Auditorium. Opening remarks were given by Ivan Šutalo MSc, director of the Agency for Vocational Education and Training and Adult Education (ASOO) and Prof Davor Petrinović PhD, vice dean for educational affairs of FER, during which FER's contribution to Croatia's scientific and educational efforts was highlighted, as the context for the importance of the location of the Fair. Students were informed and encouraged about opportunities to attend university studies at FER.

After the opening, FER's judges examined the students' works and determined the best ones. The judges for the State Student Works Fair in Educational Sector Electrical Engineering and Computing for the school year 2012/2013 was composed of Prof Zdenko Kovačić PhD, Prof Mario Vražić PhD and Iva Bojić PhD. The judges judged the works in the name of FER which was certified by Prof Nedjeljko Perić PhD with his signature on certificates that were given to authors and mentors of the best works during the closing ceremonies at 18 o'clock in the Grey Auditorium.

The best work of the Fair was determined to be the Musical Tesla Coil by Ivan Kožar, mentored by Ivan Jurić from the Technical School Ruđer Bošković, Zagreb. Second place was given to the work Logical Analyzer by Ferdinand Bregović, mentored by Miljenko Toašek from the Electromechanical School Varaždin, while third place was given to Traffic Lights by Luka Kucelja, mentored by Ivica Palikuće from High School Sesvete. The judges gave a special commendation to the work Conversion of a Gas-Powered Car Into a Fully Electrical Vehicle by the student team from Vocational School Vice Vlatković in Zadar, mentored by their teacher Ante Ivanac.

The judges decided to award an addidtional special commendation. The special commendation was awarded to the student team of the Vocational School Vice Vlatković, under the mentorship of teacher Ante Ivanac, because the judges considered their work excellent and worthy of special commendation, however outside of the official competition since other works were done by single students or two man teams while their work was done by a larger team.

Also, as part of the Fair, at 12 o'clock Prof Stjepan Bogdan PhD held a professional lecture for teachers - Autonomous Robotic Systems and Their Role in Modern Society.
