33 11th grade students from Zagreb's Technical School Ruđer Bošković, led by their teacher Damir Mileta MSc, visited the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing on 3rd June 2013. During the visit students had opportunity to familiarize themselves with the studies at FER and the professional opportunities that such an education offers. The departments visited were: Department of Applied Physics, Department of Radiocommunications and Department of Electronic Systems and Information Processing.

After a short welcome speech by Prof Davor Petrinović PhD, vice dean for educational affairs of FER, students seperated into three groups which in turn visited all the departments that were taking part in the visit.
Prof Tomislav Petković PhD shows a practical experiment at the Department of Applied Physics
At the Department of Applied Physics (ZPF) Prof Tomislav Petković PhD showed students, through attractive and practical experiments, some of the course contents of Physics 1 and 2, elaborating that the knowledge needed to pass those courses represents fundamental engineering knowledge required of any engineer. Therefore, students had opportunity to see experiments from the fields of basic mechanics, electrical engineering, optics and nuclear physics. Several ZPF laboratories were visited as well as the Depratment Library hosting unique examples of Croatian scientific production in the field of physics dating back even to the period before World War II.

At the Department of Electronic Systems and Information Processing (ZESOI) students had opportunity to see multiple prototypes of devices developed at the Deparment - everything from mine detectors, self-stabilizing unicycles, advanced sensors to eye imaging research software. Students were encouraged to come to FER and participate in the shown research projects even early in their studies.
Fiber-optic cable demonstration at the Department of Radiocommunications
At the Department of Radiocommunications (ZRK) students were shown the newest research in the fields of transmission and coding of video signals. The basics of antenae modelling in order to hit desired specifications were described. Also shown were the newest developments in fiber-optic cables, both for data transfer applications but also in the use of fiber-optic cables as sensors. The potential of fiber-optic cables was highlighted, but issues that arise during developments of fiber-optic networks were also discussed.
