ŠUZA - "From school to science and the academic community"

Students attending the computing workshop at FER

The popularization of science program “ŠUZA – from school to science and the academic community” is the new official popularization of science program of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER). The Program is intended for primary and secondary education students and their teachers. Through visits to schools, educational workshops for teachers and events at the Faculty their interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields is encouraged.

FER’s partners in this Program are the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.) and the student association eSTUDENT. The program is developed in cooperation and with the support of the Education and Teacher Training Agency (AZOO) and the Agency for Vocational Education and Training and Adult Education (ASOO).

 Primary school of Tin Ujević...

On Thursday, April 10th, 20 third grade students from Primary school of Tin Ujević from Zagreb visited the Faculty of electrical engineering and computing. The students were escorted by their teacher Barka Marjanović. During the visit the students have visited the Department of Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering and Measurements, Department of Telecommunications and participated in interactive programming workshop. The visit was part of FER's science popularization program "ŠUZA- from school to science and academic community", which is conducted by FER with cooperation of student's group eSTUDENT and Croatian IEEE section.

More informations about the visit are below.

After arriving to FER, the students have visited the Department of Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering and Measurements (ZOEM) where they had the opportunity to witness some electromagnetic experiments, and even try to do some of them. The experiments were presented by Tomislav Župan, dipl. ing. with some help by Luka Humski, mag. ing. inf. et. and Bojan Trkulja, doc. dr. sc.

At the Department of Telecommunications (ZTEL) the developing applications were presented by Jurica Babić, mag. ing. and Ivan Šemanjski, mag. ing. The applications are the part of the ICT-AAC project, regarding data transfer and new support regarding communication in information and communication technology (ICT) area, primaly made for persons with special communication problems. After short theoretical intro the students had the opportunity to try tablet applications by themselves.

After visits to the Faculty's departments, students participated in a programming workshop with help of nine lecturers. The workshop had the same concept as the one on the "Hour of code" event, organized as a part of "Computer Science Education Week". Students learned how the programming works thorough online tutorial games "Angry Birds" and "Light Bot", and for the course competition they were awarded with the certificates.

The event was organized by ŠUZA members Dr. Iva Bojić, Ivana Storjak and Ivana Pek, univ. bacc. ing. The organization committee would like to thank the Department of Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering and Measurements, the Department of Telecommunications and student's group eSTUDENT for their cooperation. They are also thankful to all the lecturers who helped throughout this event and gave away their free time just to show the youngsters the beauty of STEM. The lecturers were Tomislav Jagušt, dipl. ing., Jurica Babić, mag. ing., Ivan Šemanjski, mag. ing. and the members of eSTUDENT Jelena Braksa, Gordan Ovčarić and Niko Višnjić.
