LISS continues collaboration on reseacrh of technology for humanitarian demining with the Find a Better Way  charity through a new 3 year research project - METASHAPE.

The project aims to develop and experimentally validate a methodology for empowering commercial handheld pulse induction (PI) metal detectors (MDs) used in humanitarian mine action (HMA) with improved target discrimination capabilities, based on identification of general target shape, irrespective of metal type, orientation or burial depth. Such an ability has a strong potential for significant reduction of false alarm rates in HMA, by distinguishing hazardous metal targets (submunitions, bomblets, landmine fuzes, etc.), which are mostly of axisymmetric shape, from irregularly-shaped innocuous metal clutter.
