Abstract: Since Ohm’s Law forbids linear amplifier circuitry to be energy efficient, efforts to improve linear PA efficiency are a fool’s game, particularly for modern signals. How to use the strongly nonlinear circuitry necessary to achieve transmitter efficiencies exceeding 50% during modulation, while also producing all output signals at the highest modulation quality, is described in this keynote.
Short bio: Earl McCune is an IEEE Fellow, has 93 issued US patents and is a graduate of UC Berkeley, Stanford, and UC Davis. He’s been a Silicon Valley entrepreneur since 1986, starting-up two technology companies. His work experience includes NASA, Hewlett-Packard, Watkins-Johnson, Cushman Electronics, Digital RF Solutions (start-up #1), Proxim, Tropian (start-up #2), Panasonic, and he’s now the CTO at Eridan Communications (start-up #3). He’s also a full professor at TU Delft for sustainable wireless systems. Earl has authored two books with Cambridge University Press. Earl serves as Chair of the IEEE Standards working group on Energy Efficient Communication Hardware. He represents MTT-S and SSCS on two IEEE Initiatives: Sustainable ICT, and Future Networks.
