The popularization of science program “ŠUZA – from school to science and the academic community” is the new official popularization of science program of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER). The Program is intended for primary and secondary education students and their teachers. Through visits to schools, educational workshops for teachers and events at the Faculty their interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields is encouraged.

FER’s partners in this Program are the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.) and the student association eSTUDENT. The program is developed in cooperation and with the support of the Education and Teacher Training Agency (AZOO) and the Agency for Vocational Education and Training and Adult Education (ASOO).

Students from Primary School Pavel...

At Thursday, February  27th, Faculty of Electrical engineering and Computing in Zagreb was visited by 23 third grade students from Primary School Pavel Miškin Zagreb escorted by their teacher Ivana Fak. During the visit the students had the chance to see FER’s ACROSS center and participate in interactive coding workshop where some of them coded their very first programs.  The visit was held as a part of FER’s science popularization program called “ŠUZA- from school to science and academic community”, which is conducted by FER in cooperation with student’s group eSTUDENT and Croatian section IEEE.

Details about the visit can be read in following text.

At arrival the students first visited FER’s ACROSS center where they were given the chance to see real scientifically equipped laboratory. The laboratory has robotic mobile platforms, manipulators, quadrocopters and humanoid-like robots. The equipment was presented to the students and after that they had the chance to control some of the robots displayed. They were particularly fond of humanoid robots, and they even played “tic-tac-toe” against them. Robotic program was presented to the students in ACROSS center by FranoPetrić and Igor Cvišić from FER’s automation institute.

After the visit to the ACROSS center, the students had the opportunity to participate in coding workshop. The workshop was prepared by TomislavJagušt from FER. TomislavJagušt was helped with 8 colleges from FER, and they helped the young students to make their first coding programs. The workshop was the same as one held at The Hour of Coding, the workshop organized as a part of Computer Science Education Week. The students had the chance to learn some basic coding through online tutorials Angry Birds and LightBot. As an award for workshop completion the students got their own certificate.

In workshop’s organization were ŠUZA’s members Iva Bojić, Ivana Pek and Ivana Storjak. The organization team is thankful to Department of Applied Computing, Department of Control and Computer Engineering, STEM members Ana Sović, Marija Katić, Neven Drljević and Leon Dragić, as well as all the eSTUDENT members who helped for their cooperation in this workshop, Gordan Ovčarić, Niko Višnjić, Maja Filaković and Vesna Magjarević.
