The popularization of science program “ŠUZA – from school to science and the academic community” is the new official popularization of science program of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER). The Program is intended for primary and secondary education students and their teachers. Through visits to schools, educational workshops for teachers and events at the Faculty their interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields is encouraged.

FER’s partners in this Program are the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.) and the student association eSTUDENT. The program is developed in cooperation and with the support of the Education and Teacher Training Agency (AZOO) and the Agency for Vocational Education and Training and Adult Education (ASOO).


News

On Thursday, 29th of May 2014, representatives from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb took part in the first inter-county Exhibit of Innovation in Ivanić-Grad. The goal of the exhibit was to promote technical sciences and display the innovative and creative drives of the young individuals. Through their passion for knowledge and innovative designs, these young people signify the future of Croatian economy and commerce, ensuring that we leave a recognizable mark in the world. The exhibit was organized by Elektronički i računalni klub iz Ivanić-Grada and Zajednica tehničke kulture Zagrebačke županije in cooperation with the Association of Croatian Innovators. The ''ŠUZA - Iz škole u znanost i akademsku zajednicu'' science popularization program was presented by faculty lecturer Jurica Babić, mag. ing. , and Ivana Pek, univ. bacc. ing., co-manager of the “ŠUZA” organizational board and head of the eSTUDENT science promotion team. Mr. Babić presented the ICT-AAC project, which presents a novel approach to the transferal of knowledge and development of new communications techniques in the ICT field, tailored to individuals with special communication needs.

State Student Works Fair in...

On Monday, May the 5th 2014, the State Student Works Fair in Educational Sector Electrical Engineering and Computing was held for the second time at FER. There were 32 students and students groups from 24 technical and vocational schools participating at the Fair and presenting their works in the Faculty area.

This year’s Fair at FER was organized by cooperation of Agency of vocational education and adult education (ASOO) and FER through FERs program of science popularization „ŠUZA- from school to science and academic community“. The ŠUZA is a FER's program developed by group eSTUDENT and Croatian Section IEEE.

Students of the Electrotechnical...

On Tuesday, 29th of April 2014, fourth grade students of the Electrotechnical School Zagreb visited the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER). The students were accompanied by their teachers Romana Bogut and Andreja Bednjac, alumni of the Faculty, and their physics and polytechnics teacher and principal of the School Renato Matejaš. During their visit, the students had a tour of the Department of Electronic Systems and Information Processing (ZESOI) and the Centre of Research Excellence for Advanced Cooperative Systems (ACROSS). The visit was organized as a part of the „ŠUZA – Iz škole u znanost i akademsku zajednicu“ program, the science popularization program of the Faculty which is co-organized by the student association eSTUDENT and the Croatian IEEE section.

eSTUDENT and SUZA at the 12th...

The 12th Festival of Science was held from the 7th to 12th of April 2014 at the Zagreb Technical Museum. “Waves” was the main theme of this year’s Festival , but interesting seminars and workshops on other themes were present as well. Members of the student association eSTUDENT joined the Festival on Thursday, April 10th 2014, and presented the science popularization program of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing ''ŠUZA – Iz škole u znanost i akademsku zajednicu'' (From School to Science and the Academic Community), of which they are co-organizers. In addition, they presented the Elektroboj student competition which is another successful project of eSTUDENT. Further contributing to the Festival, by organizing an interactive presentation titled “'Glazbena olovka” (A singing pen), which was presented by student Ivan Kunović.

 Primary school of Tin Ujević...

On Thursday, April 10th, 20 third grade students from Primary school of Tin Ujević from Zagreb visited the Faculty of electrical engineering and computing. The students were escorted by their teacher Barka Marjanović. During the visit the students have visited the Department of Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering and Measurements, Department of Telecommunications and participated in interactive programming workshop. The visit was part of FER's science popularization program "ŠUZA- from school to science and academic community", which is conducted by FER with cooperation of student's group eSTUDENT and Croatian IEEE section.

Scientific Saturday at FER Write Up

A science promotion event titled “Scientific Saturday“ was held on Saturday, 15th of March 2014., at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER), University of Zagreb.
Scientific Saturday at FER is a one-day event for high school students intended to bring them closer to science and research in STEM fields through practical workshops and demonstrations. The event was attended by more than 30 high school students which had the opportunity to witness the everyday engineering challenges researchers and students experience at the Faculty.

Among other things, they developed their first expert systems, constructed a traffic light regulation system, implemented a computer vision algorithm to differentiate playing cards, got insight into the language of the Internet and dipped their toes in game development using the Unity game engine. The workshops were administered by former and current student at FER, while the event was visited by high-schoolers from Zagreb, Zadar and Varaždin.

Scientific Saturday at FER

At Saturday, March 15th, at Faculty of electrical engineering and computing will be held “Scientific Saturday at FER”, starting 10am. This science popularization event is organized by Society of education outside of the box- EVO with cooperation of Faculty of electrical engineering and computing Zagreb, and its science popularization team “ŠUZA- from school to science and academic community”. The event is also supported by eSTUDENT and Croatian IEEE section representative dr.sc. Iva Bojić.

Students from Primary School Pavel...

At Thursday, February  27th, Faculty of Electrical engineering and Computing in Zagreb was visited by 23 third grade students from Primary School Pavel Miškin Zagreb escorted by their teacher Ivana Fak. During the visit the students had the chance to see FER’s ACROSS center and participate in interactive coding workshop where some of them coded their very first programs.  The visit was held as a part of FER’s science popularization program called “ŠUZA- from school to science and academic community”, which is conducted by FER in cooperation with student’s group eSTUDENT and Croatian section IEEE.

"Why geniuses make for poor...

A student discussion panel titled "Why geniuses make for poor students?" will be held on Friday, 21th of February, in room A111 at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing. The discussion is organized within the "Science for everyone" program by the student association eSTUDENT, in accordance with the Croatian Psychology Society. The Society will be organizing the Seventh annual week of Psychology in Croatia, from the 17th to the 23rd of February. Guest lecturers include Jasna Cvetković - Lay, founder of the "Bistrić" association and dr. Ana Sović, member of the "ŠUZA" program organization board, who will present their current work with gifted children.

The second monthly meeting of STEM promoters will be held on Thursday, January 16th at 3.30 p.m., in classroom D115 at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing. As with previous meetings, the meeting is open to all topics related to STEM promotion. Everyone interested is welcome to partake and contribute to the discussion with their own ideas and questions related to the popularization of science. Participate and exchange ideas to improve science popularization, and be able to receive your fellow colleagues’ feedback on your future promotional activities.

The "Hour of Code" Workshop...

An interactive workshop titled "Hour of Code", was held on Sunday, December 15th 2013., at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER). More than 100 attendees from the ages 6 to 46 attended the workshop and got acquainted with coding while writing their first computer programs.

The workshop was organized through the " ŠUZA - Iz škole u znanost i akademsku zajednicu " program for the promotion of science at FER in cooperation with the IEEE society and the student association eSTUDENT.
Judging by the reactions and positive feedback received from the participants, the workshop was deemed a success. In addition, we received multiple request for future workshops, which are in line with the objectives of the " ŠUZA " program.

First monthly meeting for STEM Promoters

First regular monthly meeting for STEM Promoters is scheduled on Thursday, December 19th at 15:30. Location of the meeting is at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in room D163. Meeting will be held as an open discussion on all issues related to science popularization.

As part of the meeting, student Aleksandar Gavrilović will give a lecture in which he will demonstrate GameMaker tool together with the concept of summer workshops for making computer games within the ŠUZA program for science popularization.

Interactive course "The Hour of...

On December 15th, 2013 an interactive course “The Hour of Code” will be held at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in Zagreb in classrooms A101 and A102 from 3pm to 5pm. The course is a part of a global "Computer Science Education Week", a worldwide project started as a collaboration between Mark Zuckerberg and an author of a popular mobile phone application called Angry Birds. It is also organized as a part of the Faculty’s' program of science popularization called "ŠUZA", together in a cooperation with the student organization eSTUDENT.

 

To attend the course, all attendants have to report their arrival by sending an e-mail to suza@fer.hr.

A workshop on popularization of STEM...

From 18th to 29th of November a first workshop on popularization of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields was held at FER. Fifteen mostly younger research associates and a few our students participated in the workshop. The workshop was about popularization in general, studying theory, presentation skills and dramaturgy. The workshop was held by M.Sc. Predrag Pale and dramaturges Irena Krčelić. As a product of first popularization ZTIM at FER, the Facebook group named ŠUZA or Science popularization was made. This group is open for everyone interested in popularization of STEM fields.

FER Open Days

On the occasion of the 18th Festival of the University of Zagreb, from November 15th to November 16th, FER Open Days took place at Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing. Vice dean for education, professor Davor Petrinović, Ph.D. gave an introductory lecture through which he presented requirements for enrolment for the next academic year together with general information about the Faculty and its education programme. A short promotional video, filmed by Faculty students, demonstrating what FER's freshmen can expect was shown after the lecture. Visitors could afterwards choose between various activities which included visiting departments and laboratories, practical demonstrations and lectures about popular science.

Collaboration between SUZA and...

On August 14th, 2013 Iva Bojic, PhD held an invited talk at Summer School of Science. This invited talk was entitled How to efficiently write a scientific paper and its goal was to explain to high school students how to write their first scientific paper. Almost twenty high school students, which participated in Summer School of Science 2013, attended this lecture. Students came from Croatia, France, Hungary and Serbia. After they heard the lecture, they wrote their scientific papers and presented them in September 2013 at the international conference ELMAR 2013. Their papers were published in Proceedings of secondary school students session ELMAR-2013.

33 11th grade students from Zagreb's Technical School Ruđer Bošković, led by their teacher Damir Mileta MSc, visited the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing on 3rd June 2013. During the visit students had opportunity to familiarize themselves with the studies at FER and the professional opportunities that such an education offers. The departments visited were: Department of Applied Physics, Department of Radiocommunications and Department of Electronic Systems and Information Processing.

FER Day at Science Festival

11th Science Festival took place at Zagreb's Technical Museum from 22nd to 27th of April. The topic of this year’s festival was “The Future”, but also other science subjects have been covered. The Faculty Day of FER was on April 26th where “ŠUZA” joined Faculty representatives who demonstrated humanoid robots. The Festival was held primarily for children and youth, thusly all demonstrations were adapted to be appealing, interactive and visitor oriented. Children could dance and walk with the robots or play a game of Tic-Tac-Toe with them. Visitors could also learn all about “ŠUZA” programme activities.

On Thursday, 18th April 2013, the State Student Works Fair in Educational Sector Electrical Engineering and Computing was held for the first time at FER. At the Fair 34 students and student teams from 28 technical and vocational high school publicly presented their works in FER's Laptop Alley.

The Fair drew attention from numereous interested visitors. A special interest for the works was expressed by many FER professors, assistents and students, showing students that their works are meaningful and interesting to experts in the field.

Due to the interest by the professional public and the great interest in their works, students, their mentors and the Agency for Vocational Education and Training and Adult Education deemed this year's fair as very sucessful.

Swedish high school students and their colleagues from the ISI high school of Zagreb, visited the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing on Wednesday, 20th March 2013. The visit was made as part of FER's popularization of science program ŠUZA, with a focus on mobile application development. Therefore, students visited the Department of Applied Computing and the Department of Telecommunications and attended the lecture "Design: UX and UI".

This year's Saint Nicholas Day, 6th December 2012, was made more festive at the Faculty by a visit of 7th and 8th grade students of the Primary School King Tomislav from Zagreb.

The students visited FER's ACROSS centre where they could observe research equipment needed for research into mobile platforms, manipulators, UAVs and humanoid robots. They also visited FER's Laboratory for Renewable Energy Sources (LARES) which researches solar and wind energy generation, as well as hydrogen fuel cell energy storage.

At the Department of Electroacustics they saw a demonstration of physical phenomenons related to sound propagation, visited the so-called "deaf chamber" and experienced professional audio equipment in its ideal environment. Using a popular song, the dangers of loud music were demonstrated as well as warnings of hearing impairment given.

After the tour, the students and their teachers were given traditional Saint Nicholas Day gifts.

On 7th November 2012 the Cooperation Agreement between FER and the Agency for Vocational Education and Training and Adult Education (ASOO) was signed. The Agreement was signed by the dean of FER, Prof Nedjeljko Perić PhD, and the director of ASOO, Ivan Šutalo MSc.

Through the Agreement, FER and ASOO have commited to cooperation in all fields of mutual interest and especially with regards to joint project proposal submissions and joint approaches to the industry and public administration in the context of research, professional development and education for young students as well as adults.

Cooperation agreement signed between...

On Wednesday, 31st October 2012, the Cooperation Agreement between FER and the Education and Teacher Training Agency (AZOO) was signed. The Agreement was signed by the dean of FER, Prof Nedjeljko Perić PhD, and the director of AZOO, Vinko Filipović MSc.

This Agreement opens the doors to close cooperation between two important institutions in the field of education in Croatia, which will at first be focused on improving educational opportunities in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), fields which are recognized as the engines of economic development in modern countries. Cooperation on concrete activities targeted at primary schools and gymnasiums is set to begin in 2013.
