New project in partnership with...

LISS partnered with INETEC – Institute for Nuclear Technology, Zagreb, Croatia in a project “SMART EC – Diagnostic system for eddy current testing” financed by HAMAG-BICRO through Operational Programme "Competitiveness and cohesion" of the European Regional Development Fund (Strengthening the economy by applying research and innovation, IRI-2).

The objective of this three-year project is research and development of new probes and diagnostic systems for non-destructive testing of flat and curved surfaces and welds of industrial systems using the eddy current method. The new probes will be developed that, thanks to their construction, shape and electronic solutions, provide highly reliable data on the condition of planar structures and welds regardless of the material of the object and in conditions of variable and unknown probe lift-off from the object. The main goal of diagnostic systems is to provide reliable information about the condition of the test object through automated processing of probe signals and detection and classification of indications and changes in the test object. Project activities require a multidisciplinary team of researchers from INETEC and FER in the fields of mechanical engineering, sensor electronics, computational electromagnetism, signal processing and machine learning.

LISS continues collaboration on reseacrh of technology for humanitarian demining with the Find a Better Way  charity through a new 3 year research project - METASHAPE.

The project aims to develop and experimentally validate a methodology for empowering commercial handheld pulse induction (PI) metal detectors (MDs) used in humanitarian mine action (HMA) with improved target discrimination capabilities, based on identification of general target shape, irrespective of metal type, orientation or burial depth. Such an ability has a strong potential for significant reduction of false alarm rates in HMA, by distinguishing hazardous metal targets (submunitions, bomblets, landmine fuzes, etc.), which are mostly of axisymmetric shape, from irregularly-shaped innocuous metal clutter.

New project grant: MIMES - Modeling...

LISS won its second research grant from Croatian Science Foundation for project MIMES - Modeling and inverse methods for near field electromagnetic sensors. The project started in Februrary 2018 and will last for 5 years.

The overall objective of this project is to strengthen the LISS group dealing with research on sensor technologies and interfaces, embedded sensor systems, forward modelling and inverse methods for near field electromagnetic sensing modality (NFEMS). During the project, the research group will develop and implement computationally efficient forward models for NFEMS in the domains of non-destructive testing of tubes and proximal soil sensing. These applications include two very different set of material properties (high conductive, magnetic, homogenous with small inclusions vs. low conductive, dielectric and heterogeneous) so different modelling approaches can be tested and complementary knowledge extracted. The team will also study inverse methods based on the implemented models and will experimentally demonstrate the researched concepts on two industry-relevant applications. In order to accomplish the project's objectives, the group will engineer novel NFEMS interfaces and embedded systems with high performance in terms of sensitivity, accuracy, processing power and harsh environment operation.

New project grant - SENSIRRIKA -...

LISS in partnership with dr. Monika Zovko from Department of Soil Amelioration of Faculty of Agriculture won research grant from Croatian Science Foundation for project SENSIRRIKA - Advanced sensor systems for precision irrigation in karst landscape. The project starts in March 2017 and will last for 4 years.

First part of the research aims to development of an advanced electromagnetic (EM) karst soil moisture sensor. Second part of the research refers to cost-effective sensors for plant water balance monitoring that need to be densely deployed due to high within-field variability of soil. The sensors are ultra low power and use energy harvesting. They form wireless sensor network providing sensor data integration over field area. The network uses open communication technologies enabling scalability and upgrading. In third part of the research data from a field demonstrator are agronomically validated. In this project we will use our expertise in irrigation of karst; modelling of EM soil properties and design of advanced EM sensors; application of wireless sensor networks in agriculture; and design of ultra low power sensor interfaces, energy harvesting systems and networked embedded systems. We will demonstrate the developed system in field and transfer the knowledge and experiences to professional community and industry.

LISS research activities in the field of electomagnetic induction sensors received another boost by winning a competitive proof-of-concept grant from HAMAG-BICRO (Croatian Agency for SMEs, Innovations and Investments). The project "Rotating magnetic field probe for NDT of safety critical components of industrial facilities", started in July 2016, will last for 12 months. The objective of this project is a prototype and demonstration of technical feasibility of an eddy current probe for NDT of tubes with an innovative construction of the transmitter and excitation that will generate the rotating magnetic field inside the tube. This approach will provide a 3D image of the tube wall without any mechanically moving parts and with the minimal number of the inductive sensors, thus significantly simplifying the construction and robustness in comparison to the state-of-the-art mechanically rotating probes.
