Zdenko Kovačić (1958) received his Ph.D.E.E. in 1993 from the University of Zagreb, Croatia. He is a full professor with tenure at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (UNIZG-FER) and Head of the Laboratory for Robotics and Intelligent Control Systems (LARICS). He spent 1990/91 as an IREX visiting researcher at the Bradley Department of Electrical Engineering, the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, USA. From 2004 to 2008 he was the Head of the Department of Control and Computer Engineering. He is the recipient of the University of Zagreb “Fran Bošnjaković” award for the year 2013 for his distinctive scientific efforts in advancing and developing control, flexible automation and robotics systems with emphasis on robot control, cooperative robotic systems, intelligent control, service robotics, humanoids, and walking robots.

He has been a leader of more than 40 R&D projects. He is the author of 2 scientific monographs, 1 university textbook, 8 book chapters, 21 journal papers and more than 150 papers presented at the conferences. He was the advisor of 7 Doctors of Science, 7 Masters of Science, 122 diploma engineers (4 with emphasis on R&D work), 85 Bachelors of Science, and 19 students who received University of Zagreb Rector Awards for their student works.

Since 1993 he has been a member of IEEE. He served as the president of the Croatian IEEE Robotics and Automation Chapter from 2010 to 2013.  He is a member of the IFAC Technical Committees for Robotics and for Adaptive Control and Tuning. He was the president of the Croatian Robotics Society 2005-2010 (also founder) and the vice-president (2011-2014). In 2012 he was the elected president of the Croatian Robotic Association. He is also the founder and member of the presidency of KoREMA - Croatian Society for Communication, Computer, Electronics, Measurement, and Control. He is a member of several journal editorial boards - Automatika (KoREMA), Journal of Intelligent Robotic Systems (Springer Verlag), Fire-fighting and management (Croatian Fire-fighting Community). He also served as a program chair, invited sessions chair, and track-chair on numerous international conferences.

He actively participated in the popularization of science by participating in various events such as the Festival of Science (Technical Museum, Zagreb), Festival of technical culture, Robotics Schools organized by the Croatian Robotics Society, demonstration seminars for secondary school teachers and others.
