THE CENTER AT FER IS OPEN!

As previously announced, the Competence center for software engineering in open systems has been officially opened on May, 6th, 2009. at the DORS/CLUC conference in Zagreb. This center currently gathers partners from academia, organizations and government bodies. The conference, opening of the Center and the discussion were covered by eminent Croatian IT magazine BUG and public Croatian television HRT.

As an integral part of the opening of the Center, a round-table discussion entitled Open software engineering was held on the Wednesday 6th. In the introductory part of the event, an ambiguity in the term Open software engineering was addressed and key factors necessary for acceptance and widespread adoption of open systems were defined (awareness, knowledge, models, collaboration, research and standardization). During the fruitful and competent discussion that lasted more than 90 minutes, participants from various interest groups (industry, education, research, user groups etc.) presented their views of the current state and the role of open systems, open source software, actors and range of activities necessary for achieving key adoption factors. During the discussion, special interest was dedicated to the newly established competence center and its role in promoting the use of open standards, technologies and systems, but also to their role in the creation of new software products as a comparative and competitive advantage in the global ICT market.
