Biography
Dr. Sven Lončarić is a full professor of electrical engineering and computer science with permanent tenure at Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb, Croatia. He received Diploma of Engineering and Master of Science degrees in electrical engineering from University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER) in 1985 and 1989, respectively. As a Fulbright scholar he received Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in electrical engineering from University of Cincinnati, USA in 1994. From 2001-2003, he was an assistant professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology, USA. His areas of research interest are digital image processing and computer vision. He was principal investigator on a number of research and development projects in image processing and analysis including applications in medicine, automotive industry, and visual quality inspection. With his students and collaborators he co-authored more than 200 publications in scientific journals and conferences. He is among the top ten cited scientists in the area of technical sciences in Croatia. Prof. Lončarić is featured on a comprehensive list released by Stanford University of the top 1% percent world's scientists in the category "Artificial intelligence and image processing", 2021. He was Chair of the Department of Electronic Systems and Information Processing. He is the founder and director of the Center for Computer Vision at University of Zagreb. Prof. Lončarić is the head of the Image Processing Group. He is the Chair of the committee for development of biomedical engineering at the University of Zagreb. He is a co-director of the national Center of research excellence in data science and cooperative systems. Prof. Lončarić was the Chair of the IEEE Croatia Section. He is a senior member of IEEE and a member of Croatian Academy of Technical Sciences. Prof. Lončarić received several awards for his scientific and professional work.
