World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, celebrated annually on May 17 since 1969, reminds us of how deeply the internet, telecommunications, and new technologies have transformed our lives—from watching movies on the go to participating in meetings from the other side of the world.
Telecommunications are much more than technical infrastructure; they are the foundation of the contemporary economy. Without them, there would be no e-commerce, remote work, or the digital services we now take for granted. A developed telecommunications network means better connectivity, greater security, more innovation, and broader access to knowledge and opportunities for all.
At FER, we’ve been engaged in telecommunications for over 74 years—since the founding of the Department of Telecommunications. Today, our researchers and students are leading the development of future technologies: from 5G networks, the Internet of Things (IoT), to artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and accessible communication solutions.
At the center of our research is the work of laboratories within the Department. IoTLab (Internet of Things Laboratory) is focused on developing and applying IoT-based solutions, including smart cities, sensor networks, and industrial automation. MUEXLab (Multimedia Quality of Experience Research Lab) focuses on researching user experience in multimedia communications, aiming to make services more accessible and higher quality for all users. Their projects connect the physical and digital worlds in the service of a smarter, more sustainable, and more connected society.
In addition to that, we especially highlight activities in the area of inclusivity. We are proud of the projects and solutions that contribute to better digital inclusion for people with disabilities:
-
Gibalica – an AI solution that uses a smart device’s camera to recognize user movements and guide them through exercises, promoting activity and health.
-
Accessibility 2024 – Zagreb’s Main Train Station is now equipped with communication boards to help people with disabilities navigate more easily.
-
INNOSID – an international project, Innovative Solutions based on Emerging Technologies for Improving Social Inclusion of People with Disabilities, awarded as the most inclusive project of the Erasmus+ program.
-
Green Siesta – an educational game on sustainable development, developed using AI and augmented reality.
At FER, we learn and work to build a future where the world is better connected. Happy World Telecommunication and Information Society Day!
