Prof. Siniša Šegvić, PhD, is the recipient of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU) Award for the highest scientific and artistic achievements in the Republic of Croatia for the year 2024. Professor Šegvić received the award in the field of technical sciences for his scientific achievement titled "Robust and Efficient Methods for Understanding Natural Scenes."

The award was presented to Professor Šegvić at a formal session held in celebration of HAZU Day on April 29, 2025.

Congratulations to the professor on this prestigious award!

This achievement comprises a body of work that includes eight papers published in top-quartile journals (according to the Journal Citation Reports) between 2020 and 2024, as well as eleven papers presented at leading scientific conferences in the field of computer vision.

The scientific body of work addresses solutions for efficient inference and the mitigation of vulnerability to anomalies in visual scenes. The contributions enable new applications of natural scene understanding in autonomous vehicles, logistics robots, traffic safety assessment, human action recognition in video, and open-world recognition. This scientific contribution represents a significant advancement in the application of deep computer vision models to uncontrolled natural environments.

In the fields of artificial intelligence and computer vision, Professor Šegvić and his research team have won three international competitions in semantic segmentation of natural scenes. He leads several international and national scientific projects, including collaborations with Croatian industry.

The Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU) is the foremost institution in Croatia dedicated to promoting scientific research, cultural heritage, and the arts across various disciplines, including the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences. Founded in 1861, it brings together distinguished scholars and artists to advance knowledge and foster international collaboration.
