As part of FER's international activities, as well as activities related to the stimulation of technological development, on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, a meeting on the topic "Chips, the university and technological development" will be held.
How they do it at the Belgian university KU Leuven (KUL), with which FER has been cooperating successfully for a long time, the introductory lecture "Why is KU Leuven an enterprising and successful university?" will be spoken by Professor Georges Gielen, an expert in designing analog chips who has held the position of vice-rector for research, engineering and technology KUL.
The lecture will be followed by a panel discussion in which, in addition to Professor Georges Gielen, Raul Blečić, PhD, FER alumnus with doctoral research experience at KUL, now expert in electromagnetic compatibility at Rimac Technology, and Professor Nebojša Stojčić, vice-chancellor of the University of Dubrovnik and expert in innovation systems and industrial economics. The moderator of the panel is professor Adrijan Barić from FER.
The meeting will be held in English and is open to the public with prior registration (here).
We invite teachers, students, alumni and everyone interested to join us!
FER Dean Vedran Bilas believes that Croatia needs more ambitious steps in the national system in order to achieve its strategic interests in conditions of exposure to the global market of higher education. It is necessary, he adds, to create an internationally recognizable university brand.
The European Chip Act opened up new opportunities for research, technological and business breakthroughs in Croatia, as well as for stronger inclusion in European value chains. With this goal in mind, FER signed a cooperation agreement with imec, a leading institute for research, development and innovation in nanoelectronics and digital technologies, at the beginning of the year.
In addition, FER, in cooperation with research, academic and industrial partners from Croatia, led the initiative to form the Croatian Center of Competence for Semiconductors (CROCCS). The Government of the Republic of Croatia, by Decision of September 13, 2024, provided funds for the financing of the Center in the period from 2025 to 2028.
PROGRAMME:
15:00 – 15:10 Opening greetings
15:10 – 15:55 Lecture by prof. Georges Gielen: Why is KU Leuven an enterprising and successful university?
15:55 – 16:30 Panel discussion: Chips, university and technological development
Lecture description:
The University of Leuven (KU Leuven) scores high in international rankings and even tops Reuter’s most innovative university ranking in Europe. This presentation highlights the main pillars for this success: the research policy, the drive towards internationalization, the academic hiring and promotion strategy, and the drive towards innovation and valorization. This will be illustrated with some success stories of academic programs and start-up companies in the area of integrated micro/nanoelectronics. Also new emerging needs in talent development to be addressed by universities will be discussed.
Georges Gielen - CV:
Georges Gielen is a full professor at KU Leuven. His research interests are in the design of analogue and mixed-signal integrated circuits, especially in analogue and mixed-signal CAD tools and design automation, including modelling, simulation, optimization and synthesis as well as testing. He is a frequently invited speaker/lecturer and coordinator/partner of several (industrial) research projects in this area, including an ERC Advanced Grant. He has (co-)authored 10 books and more than 700 publications in edited books, international journals and conference proceedings. He is a 1997 Laureate of the Belgian Royal Academy of Sciences, Literature and Arts in the discipline of Engineering. He has been a Fellow of the IEEE since 2002 and received the IEEE CAS Mac Van Valkenburg Award in 2015 and the IEEE CAS Charles Desoer Award in 2020, as well as the EDAA Achievement Award in 2021. He is an elected member of the Academia Europaea.
