Introducing the new FER management!

With the new academic year also began the mandate of the new management of FER. Since 1 October, Professor Vedran Bilas, PhD, has taken over as Dean of the Faculty for the term of the academic years 2022/2023 and 2023/2024. He is assisted in the management by his closest colleagues: the Vice Dean for Research and Innovation, Professor Stjepan Bogdan, PhD, the Vice Dean for Management and Digitalization, Professor Jadranko Matuško, PhD, the Vice Dean for Students, Associate Professor Ana Sušac, PhD, and the Vice Dean for Education, Professor Bojan Trkulja, PhD.

The premises that will guide the new FER administration in the coming term are openness, responsibility, organisation, and optimism.

More information can be found below.

Professor Vedran Bilas' field of research is smart sensors and their application. "As an engineer and researcher, I enjoy projects, the whole journey and the end result in the hands of the user. Especially when students learn and gain experience on this journey - priceless. Technology helps people, but it is not enough for development and prosperity. That is why I study and teach courses like Technology Entrepreneurship, Management in Engineering, and Innovation Management," emphasises Dean Bilas.

He sees the deanship as a service to the community. During his tenure, he will focus on internal processes and progress in teaching, research, and innovation (transparent and inclusive management), collaboration within the University, but also with policymakers and the business community on external actions. One of the priorities will be to improve the quality of graduate studies and to renovate the Faculty buildings while maintaining the conditions and quality of study and work.

Vice Dean for Research and Innovation, Professor Stjepan Bogdan, considers teaching a privilege, as it allows him to spend time with interesting and intelligent young people, from whom, he says, he learns something new every day. During his tenure as Vice Dean, he hopes to "involve a greater number of younger FER teachers in the management of research projects and improve the transfer of innovations into spin-off companies founded by our graduates, post-docs, and FER staff". Vice Dean Bogdan's research area is unmanned aerial vehicles and multi-robot systems.

"My research area is advanced control systems with a specific application in mechatronics. I enjoy being a lecturer because I enjoy the intellectual freedom and creativity it offers, as well as the opportunity to work with exceptional colleagues and excellent students," says the Vice Dean for Management and Digitalization, Professor Jadranko Matuško. He sees the position of Vice Dean as his contribution to the better functioning of the Faculty as a whole, ensuring that FER continues to be the best-organised faculty in Croatia.

The Vice Dean for Students, Professor Ana Sušac, developed an interest in education during her Physics studies, which she tries to combine with the field she is involved in today, namely educational physics and educational neuroscience. "As a researcher in this field, but also as a teacher at FER, I know how much the COVID -19 pandemic and the earthquake affected students. During my tenure as Vice Dean for Students, I will try to mitigate the negative impact of external factors and work to improve various aspects of students' lives at FER. We will continue existing collaborations with schools and establish new ones to popularise science, but also to familiarise future students with the study requirements, necessary work habits, and learning methods".

Professor Bojan Trkulja sees the position of Vice Dean for Teaching as an opportunity to contribute to the improvement of key processes related to teaching at FER. "I will support the development of teaching laboratories and the improvement of skills through additional training, especially for young teachers at the Faculty," emphasises Bojan Trkulja, whose field of research is computer modelling in electromagnetism, where mathematics, physics, electrical engineering, and computing partly overlap.
