About the lecturer:

MURAT AKPINAR, Ph.D., works as a university professor of international business at the JAMK University of Applied Sciences ( in Finland. However, his really notable prior career in the real sectors included quite a few leading positions, such as a member of the Management Board of an American-Turkish international enterprise Martin JV in Kazakhstan (oil industry), advisor for finance and accounting in a Turkish-German company Pelzer Pimsa (car industry), director of finance and accounting in a Turkish international oil pipeline operator Caspian TransCo, as well as a manager and financial analyst in the Turkish branch of a big global player in chemical industry for mass market products, Procter & Gamble. At the beginning of his career Murat worked as an associate for audits of financial reports in a big international audit company Coopers & Lybrand (later to be merged into the PriceWaterhous&Copopers). Still earlier, he worked as an associate in projects run by German Post.

By his first professional vocation, Murat is an engineer. He completed his B.S. in industrial engineering from the Bosporus University in Istanbul in 1992. He finished his M.S. in international business in 2001, at the Norwegian School of Economics and Business. Then, in 2009, he obtained his Ph.D. in economics and business administration from the University of Turku, Finland.

About the workshop:

The topics we are going to discuss with our guest are:

  • How to start and develop a successful career in an international environment? How do we manage our career? Can we plan it? What are critical turns in career?
  • What is the role of technology, with an emphasis on electrical engineering and computing, in the industries he worked in (oil, cars, chemicals, distribution of fast moving goods), and what are the perspectives of an engineer in those industries regarding the potentials for progressing into business and management, rather than „pure“ engineering?
  • How to cope with constant changes and other challenges when working in an international environment?
  • From the first hand: how does a higher education system known by its quality, such as the Finnish one, function? What is the difference in what it gives to its students, compared to other educational systems?
