Optical fiber communication and sensor systems

Course Description

High speed and large distance optical communication systems, modulation schemes, coherent systems, wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) systems. Chromatic and polarization dispersion, non-linear effects, methods for dispersion compensation. Components in optical communication networks: optical amplifiers, wavelength converters, multiplexers, optical switches, reconfigurable components. Modeling of electromagnetic wave propagation through the optical fiber, calculation of bit error rate (BER). Fiber optic sensor systems, sensors based on intensity modulation, fiber Bragg grating sensors, interferometers, polarimetric fiber sensors, distributed fiber sensor systems.
