Topic description:

Every manager faces the challenge in the initial phase of the career: what the key dimensions of the job and the related performance drivers are.

This course sets the scene for the whole TLP, outlining the map of priority topics managers have to deal with. On one side, it includes interpreting the situation at hand, identifying the key problems to be solved, as well as using thorough analysis to design both the solution and the implementation plan. On the other hand, the course focuses on the activities managers have to engage in to make sure that their organizations are ready for daily delivery of top performance, both in terms of infrastructure (such as assets and processes) and in terms of human capital (employee competences and motivation). The approach taken underlines the need to deal with challenges in a holistic way, reflecting the nature of managerial life in business organizations.

The course focuses on the strategic perspective: it starts by looking at disruption and innovation, continues with reviewing strategic drivers from the environment, and then focuses on internal drivers requiring modifications of the current business model.

The course will look at three essential issues of strategic management:

  • How should managers „read signals“ from various external and internal sources, including but not limited to the strategic implications of „VUCA“ environment, new needs of potential or existing customers, competitors, technology, regulators, own customer facing or support staff, global functions etc.
  • How „strategy on paper“ gets „connected“ to consistent and agile action at different levels of the organization? By connecting, we mean turning intentions into a set of actionable items, as well as moving the organization to swift execution, but also setting the proper organizational culture needed for it.
  • What does the above mean for us and for me personally, now and in the near future? By that we want to avoid staying abstract, at the level of „nice to know“ facts, but rather to create deeper insights and desire to apply them in daily practice.

Participants will enhance their understanding of how change processes depend on the context (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity) in which it happens, including the strategic objectives and organizational setting.

Learning how to map processes with the aim to find improvement potential and better understand bottlenecks will enable leaders to raise competitiveness both in manufacturing and office processes/areas. Failures or non-conformities happen in all organizations. The difference between unsuccessful and successful organizations is in the approach of fixing an issue or making sure to learn from it and making sure that it doesn’t repeat.
