STUDENTS' PROJECTS 2005./2006.

Students' projects 2005./2006.

In the current, third year that the course is being held, there are 41 students involved, 26 from Sweden and 15 from Croatia. It is interesting to note that every year there are more and more students from the Swedish university that are not Swedes, but are studying or are exchange students in Sweden. This year, for example, there are students in the course that come from Asia and Africa. Some teams have up to 5 team members from different nations, which makes student projects more interesting, but at the same time more difficult to manage due to cultural differences.

Because of the greater number of students from Sweden, this year two projects were developed locally. However, in one of them the database was still located in Zagreb, in order to provide the students with an opportunity to experience distributed development.

VLab

The first project under the title VLab (Virtual laboratory) is based in Zagreb. The basic idea is to develop a program environment for implementation of laboratory exercises for a group of courses under the title RASIP, by using e-learning technologies. The students will not have to come to exercises at a certain time. They will instead be able to select the time when they can reserve computer components (components are at their disposal 24 hours a day) and do the exercises over the Internet from their remote homes. After having finished the exercise, they will also be automatically graded. A part of the project has already been developed as a result of seminar and diploma theses and papers. In this project, a new system for resource reservation and administrative interface (web page) for student monitoring will be developed.

WebProject WebProject is another project hosted by Zagreb. This is a repeated project from the academic year 2003/2004, which was not successful at the time because of unrealistic goals and the fact that the students were unfamiliar with the technologies that were used. WebProject is a web application intended as support for organisation, running and monitoring of projects. It enables the development and overview of the project plan, cost analysis, task distribution, monitoring how the users work on the tasks and generating a report for both the project manager and the buyers. The interface is a web page, which is particularly suitable for distributed teams. This way the need to install a program on the user computer is eliminated, as WebProject is accessed exclusively through a web browser.
WebProject2 Due to a large number of students in Sweden, WebProject is also being developed locally in Sweden (WebProject2). It is interesting to note that the project contractors are in Croatia, and the project team has to communicate with their buyers in various ways. The Swedish project uses different technologies, which is convenient for subsequent analysis – the same task will be performed in two different ways. td>
LoCo Mälardalen University is conducting a research on component-based programs. Within the research, they are working on the SAVE project as a model for using real-time systems in automobile industry. The goal of the LoCo (Low effort Component Composition) project is a graphic editor and code generator for software development by reusing the same components in the SAVE model. Instead of manual code writing, the users will be able to design a system and add components in a graphic interface.
Merge Projekt Merge project is designed as assistance to many companies that, by developing technology, more and more often develop their own solutions. In such an environment they have difficulties tracking different development versions and their various components. Merge enables easier analysis of the merging of two or more program systems. This tool makes it easier for programmers to anticipate the duration of the merging of two systems or of changing of the old system, as well as suggests the best solutions.
SoMerTime The same project, this time under the title SoMerTime has been implemented as a local project in Sweden. The project base was in Sweden, but the students kept editing their web page, writing documents and communicating with the Croatian part of the teaching staff. As with WebProject, a different set of technologies was used to deal with issues and challenges.
