In short, the goal of this project was to create a game which is based on QR codes and accessible worldwide.
What is QR code?
QR code is a shaped 2D code that enables users to store and obtain data at a high speed by simply using the scanner (camera) located on their mobile phone. QR stands for “quick response”. Originally developed by the Japanese corporation, Denso-Wave in 1994, the codes were initially used for tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing. As the years have progressed, the genesis of this technology has enabled it to be used in a much broader context, including mobile marketing, item tracking and location marking.
Certain brands and industries have already recognized QR Codes as a new communication channel in their quest to reach their customers. From using them to build their social communities, to placing the codes on outdoor advertisements, for-sale signs, print advertisements, business cards, fast food wrappers, convention name badges, in-store advertisements, DVD cases, and even wine bottles, these codes are furthering the personalization aspect of mobile marketing and helping brands win the war of advertising resistance by the consumer.
QR Codes storing addresses and URLs may appear in magazines, on signs, buses, business cards or just about any object that users might need information about. Users with a camera phone equipped with the correct reader software can scan the image of the QR Code causing the phone's browser to launch and redirect to the programmed URL.
About QR Marks the Spot project . . .
In order to enable user to create or play a game based on QR codes, a system providing various services was developed. The user can access these services by visiting QR Marks the Spot Web Site which can be found on the following URL: http://161.53.67.184/QrMarksTheSpot/
After the user signs up, he/she can create his/her own game, play a game, communicate with other users by exchanging private messages or simply get the latest information about QR codes and their usage.
When creating a game, user specifies game preferences – type of the game, visibility, is game public or private, time limited or unlimited etc. This also includes defining a game location – city in which game will take place. Then, a Google Map of that city is displayed and the user adds placemarks to the map where he wishes to place his/her QR codes. User selects the locations (= addresses) in the city on the displayed Google Map in order he/she wishes the QR codes to be discovered / visited by players (1st selected location = location of the 1st QR code, 2nd selected location = location of the 2nd QR code, etc.). After specifying the number, location and order of QR codes, the user can define the content of the QR codes, for example riddle or random numbers. This content will be shown to the player when he/she takes a picture of QR code – QR code reader will “read” the content f the QR code and display it to the player. Finally, QR codes are generated and user can print them.
After this, all that user has to do is to enjoy playing a game with his/her friends :)
