Faculty: FER - Fakultet elektrotehnike i računarstva
Cro partner: Petrović, Ivan

Description:
In this project, algorithms for control of the mobile robots are being investigated, which should ensure autonomy of their navigation without any preparation of the environment. In order for the control system to fulfil this complex task, it must have the capabilities of estimating the mobile robot’s current pose, map building of the robot environment, as well as robot path planning and tracking. When investigating solutions to these problems, core implementation is expected in intelligent methods, especially concerning neural networks and fuzzy logic, as well as the probability theory and stochastic reasoning methods. Based on knowledge acquired so far and planned investigations, both teams expect further insight in the application possibilities and constraints of these methods for mobile robots navigation, with an appropriate own contribution to their further development.

Faculty: FER - Fakultet elektrotehnike i računarstva
Cro partner: Debrecin, Nenad

Description:
The aim of the project is to strengthen the theoretical knowledge of scientist and researchers at the University and to improve technical capabilities and skills of engineers and industrialists in the Republic of Croatia on the activities related to efficient use of energy in industry and service sector and related environmental protection thus enabling them to carry out energy audits and identify ways of improving efficiency in energy consumption. The study programmes are proposed in a way to acquaint students with the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge in energy conservation and energy auditing and appropriate techniques. Throughout the courses, emphasis is as much on the practical side as is on the theory, and students will carry out a number of exercises designed to consolidate understanding. The aim is to teach the concepts and theory of energy conservation to explore such problems, and to show how certain techniques can be used to solve them. The goal of the project is to develop and establish two post graduate studies at the three technical faculties at the University of Zagreb (UZ): 1. Master of Science in: - Electrical Engineering (FER) - Energy Efficiency/Environment, - Mechanical Engineering (FSB) - Energy Efficiency/Environment, - Chemical Engineering (FKIT) - Energy Efficiency/Environment; 2.
COMPUTATIONALLY EFFICIENT ROBUST MODEL PREDICTIVE CONTROL

Faculty: FER - Fakultet elektrotehnike i računarstva
Cro partner: Nedjeljko Peric

Description:
Model Predictive Control (MPC) originated in the late seventies and has developed considerably since then. There are many applications of predictive control successfully in use at present time, mostly in process industry but also applications to the control of a diversity of processes (e.g. robot manipulators, servo drives, clinical anaesthesia). The good performance of these applications shows the capacity of the MPC to achieve highly efficient control systems. MPC has become the accepted standard for complex constrained multivariable control problems in the process industries. The term Model Predictive Control does not designate a specific control strategy but a very ample range of control methods which make an explicit use of a model of the process to obtain the control signal by minimizing an objective function. The process model is used to predict the future process output at current sampling instant. This prediction capability allows solving optimal control problems online, where tracking error, namely the difference between the predicted process output and the desired reference, is minimized over a future horizon, possibly subject to constraints on the manipulated inputs and outputs. Thus, MPC requires online real-time optimization, which can be computationally quite a complex task. The different strategies of MPC can use various models to represent the relationship between the outputs and the measurable inputs, some of which are manipulated variables and others can be considered to be measurable disturbances. Most control theory and tools have been developed for systems whose evolution is described by smooth linear or non-linear state transition functions resulting, for example, from differential or difference equations. In many applications, however, the system includes discrete components, such as on/off switches or valves, gears or speed selectors. Discrete characteristics are also often introduced by the control system or by the specifications expressed as a series of if-then-else rules. Such systems are commonly referred to as hybrid systems. Mixed Logical Dynamical (MLD) systems is a framework for modeling and controlling systems described by interdependent physical laws, logic rules, and operating constraints. This project will focus on model predictive control of these systems. Two main open problems in model predictive control that need solutions are: (i) formidable on-line computational effort, which limits applicability of MPC to the relatively slow and/or small problems and (ii) robustness of MPC to the process model uncertainty and noise. Alleviation of these two problems will be the main research topics of this project. Direct project objectives are development of computationally efficient MPC algorithms and development of systematic techniques for obtaining robust MPC. These will make this profound control concept suitable for wide range of applications, ranging from processes with very fast dynamics to large-scale processes.

Faculty: FER - Fakultet elektrotehnike i računarstva
Cro partner: Debrecin, Nenad

Description:

EUropean Network on Intelligent Technologies for Smart Adaptive Systems

Faculty: FER - Fakultet elektrotehnike i računarstva
Cro partner: Petrović, Ivan

Description:
Intelligent technologies, including neural networks, fuzzy systems, machine learning and evolutionary computing, have led to many successful industrial applications but most solutions lack adaptivity and have to be redesigned when the setting or environmental parameters change significantly. Also, although these technologies have reached a mature stage and each one separately penetrates more and more application fields, they show very little interaction with each other. EUNITE, will be an open Network of Excellence towards a twofold goal: a) to create critical research mass in the area of Intelligent Technologies for better exploiting the potential of Intelligent Hybrid Systems; and; b) to foster synergies between the technologies that contribute towards building Smart Adaptive Systems, for implementation in industry and other economy sectors. OBJECTIVES EUNITE aims to encourage the development of technologies for intelligent systems and to stimulate the use of Smart Adaptive Systems in industry by: - Promoting the dialogue between the separate research communities working on Intelligent Technologies; - Shorten the lead time from scientific innovation to actual applications in industry or economy via technology transfer actions; - Encourage new enterprises coming into this area with success stories and best practice information; - Strengthen European training activities and collaboration. DESCRIPTION OF WORK The network will be comprised by three groups aiming to interconnect theory and application in an effective scheme: A) The Research Theory & Development (RTD) group will deal with theoretical aspects of the integration of Intelligents Technologies for Smart Adaptive Systems. The RTD group will organise conferences-symposia and workshops related to Intelligent Technologies and Smart Adaptive Systems, will disseminate scientific excellence via publications and will stimulate scientific co-authoring. Its members are expected also to provide executive summaries on these subjects, to work on joint case studies and seek guidelines for the Best Methodology on applying Smart Adaptive Systems. B) The Industrial Business Application (IBA) group focusing on 5 sectors of economy: Industry; Transportation; Telecommunication & Multimedia; Medicine & Healthcare; Finance, Trade & Services. The IBA group will also organise conferences, Symposia and workshops and try to increase awaraness of applied Smart Adaptive Systems and their benefits in its areas. Special actions are foreseen to encourage the use of these technologies and systems in SMEs and to help young researchers to get connected with the market. C) The Technology Transfer and Education (TTE) group that will provide the necessary information flow and education in order to promote the area and enlarge the domain of potential users. The TTE group is subdivided in two groups. The Technology Transfer (TT) group will develop strategies and actions for missing links between he research community and industry by issuing patent guidelines and related services, organising benchmarking and competitions and reporting feasibility/case studies. The Training and Education group will set up a server with a Learning Centre which in addition to educational activities will develop didactic methods and a dictionary/definition list. All three groups are in close collaboration and will produce under the supervision of the Steer ing Committee a comprehensive Roadmap on Hybrid Intelligent and Smart Adaptive Systems, stating the research challenges, the technology penetration and education of these areas. Apart from the overall co-ordination, assessment of the network and Roadmap activity supervision, a Steering Committee will seek collaborations with other networks and research communities developing also relations with associated and third countries. The Service Centre of EUNITE will support all aforementioned activities and among others will develop and administrate a dedicated WWW space and disseminate information through a Newsletter and a CD-ROM.
