Short description of the programme

 

The Postgraduate study at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing of the University of Zagreb is organised as a doctoral study. Postgraduate doctoral study programme leads to the Ph.D. academic degree in the scientific field of Electrical Engineering or the scientific field of Computing. By the academic year 2007/2008, 602 candidates were awarded with the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering or Computing.

The duration of study is three years for full time students, and it is completed by defending the submitted thesis. The student must collect altogether at least 480 ECTS credits (including credits from the previous high education) by enrolling courses and passing examinations, doing research, and publishing research results.

The student is required to successfully complete a certain number of advanced courses relevant to his or her area of research. Every student designs his or her programme of study according to a research area, by choosing the number of courses as determined by the programme. The mentor appointed to a student should endorse the student’s selection of courses.

The first phase consists of coursework in the student's field of study and area of research. This is followed by a qualifying examination intended to assess the student's qualifications to undertake the doctoral research. The programme requires students to complete a thesis proposal/prospectus. Upon successful doctoral prospectus examination, the student's time will be devoted exclusively to his or her own research, culminating in the completion of the Ph.D. thesis. The student must submit the thesis containing original research contribution, which is worthy of publication in a peer-refereed context. The final requirement is an oral defence of the thesis, which is open to the public.


Recommended study scheme is the following
:

  • 20-30 % ECTS credits for advanced courses
  • 70-80 % ECTS credits for research, including research plan and annual reports, qualifying examination, prospectus, and publications (conference and journal papers).

Programme objectives

 

The programme will afford supervised research experiences so that students develop the specific knowledge as well technical, conceptual and communication skills needed for conducting high-quality research.

The programme will provide advanced education in a number of electrical engineering and computing disciplines so that students acquire expertise that can be applied in a wide range of academic, government and industrial environments.

The programme will prepare students for careers in which a strong understanding of technology is required along with an ability to appreciate, understand, and develop their creative potential.
