Scientific Center of Excellence

Croatian Centre of Research Excellence for Data Science and Advanced Cooperative Systems, was established on November 6, 2015 as the first center of research excellence in the field of technical sciences in Croatia.

The Centre is composed of two research units:

  1. Research unit: Research in Data Science

unit coordinator prof. Sven Lončarić, Ph.D.

  1. Research unit: Research in Advanced Cooperative Systems (ACROSS)

unit coordinator prof. Ivan Petrović, Ph.D.

The activities of the centers of research excellence are aimed at improving science in Croatia and at strengthening its inclusion in the European research field, i.e. at encouraging participation in EU and other international research programmes.

Unit coordinators will rotate each year as heads of the Centre. The head of the Centre in the first year is prof. Sven Lončarić, Ph.D.

Research unit: Research in Data Science

Unit coordinator prof. Sven Lončarić, Ph.D.

The mission of this research unit is to become the leading research center in the region for research and application of data science in order to improve the quality of life and stimulate economic growth in Croatia. To this end, the Research unit will build partnerships with academic, state and business partners from the Unit’s areas of expertise, such as machine learning, data mining, complex networks, social networks, bioinformatics, natural language processing, text analysis, business analytics, advanced computing infrastructure, signal, image and video processing, and financial applications.

Research in Data Science comprises 49 scientists from nine partner institutions which deal with theory and application of this important area. Partner institutions are:

  • University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing
  • Ruđer Bošković Institute, Zagreb
  • University of Zagreb, Faculty of Science
  • University of Zagreb, Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences
  • Catholic University of Croatia
  • University of Split, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture
  • University of Rijeka, Center for Advanced Computing and Modeling
  • University of Rijeka, Faculty of Civil Engineering
  • Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology Osijek

Research unit: Research in Advanced Cooperative Systems (ACROSS)

Unit coordinator prof. Ivan Petrović, Ph.D.

The mission of the ACROSS research unit is to be the leader in research and development of new methods and advanced engineering approaches in cooperative systems. ACROSS offers a synergistic environment for the implementation of a coordinated, multidisciplinary research, where experts from various fields, by complementing each other's work, collaborate on common areas of application. Research in the ACROSS will focus on four strategic domains: i) autonomous and cooperative robot systems, ii) cognitive computer vision systems, iii) the ubiquitous sensors and networked services designed for man and iv) advanced control strategies and estimation for cyber-physical systems. The fundamental methodological research within each strategic domain will be transferred to the areas of application, thus establishing compatibility of research between domains. Priority areas of application are: i) health systems, ii) safety and protection, iii) the environment, iv) advanced city and v) factories of the future.

ACROSS has gathered 32 leading experts from 7 partner institutions:

  • University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing
  • University of Zagreb, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture
  • University of Split, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture
  • University of Rijeka, Faculty of Engineering
  • Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology Osijek
  • University of Dubrovnik
  • Ericsson Nikola Tesla
