ABOUT UNDERGRADUATE STUDY AT FER

About undergraduate (BSc) study programmes at FER

FER offers two undergraduate study programmes:

The first year of study is common to both study programmes, the study of Electrical engineering and information technology and the study of Computing. This first year gives the students fundamental knowledge in mathematics, physics, electrical engineering and computing. Also, this first year teaches the students to communicate effectively and acquaints them with general principles of engineering.

In the second year, the students broaden the knowledge in mathematics and electrical engineering or computing, but also the students are introduced to quality management and principles of economy. To emphasize individual work, they conduct and present a seminar.

In the third year, especially in the 6th semester, slight specialisations are introduced by corresponding mandatory and elective courses, which give some practical knowledge to students who will not continue their studies at the higher, master level. Some knowledge on ecology and law is also given. In the 5th semester, to increase their project management and teamwork competences, the students in groups of 6-8 complete projects. The study finishes after the bachelor thesis is successfully completed and publicly defended.

One of the main goals of the Bologna programme reform is to switch from teaching to learning, so the students have to attend only about 20 lecture hours per week.
The first cycle of study ends when all mandatory courses are completed and 180 ECTS credits are collected. The work on the bachelor thesis, which must be publicly defended, contributes with 12 ECTS credits. 

 
Rules of studying at FER

All study programmes at FER are taught according to the prerequisite system. For every study programme, a set of mandatory and a set of elective courses have been defined. The student can enrol all courses for which prerequisites have been completed, amounting to around 30 ECTS credits per semester.

The students are obliged to be present at all forms of teaching. The groups will not exceed the number of 75 students, and the teaching will encompass both the theory and application.

All courses will be graded with points through continuous assessment, consisting of homework, periodical tests, two mid-term exams and the final exam.

Some of the students who gain insufficient points for a passing grade, according to the Faculty statute, will be allowed to take another final exam, within 2 weeks. Those who fail, together with the students who have gained insufficient points through the semester, have to enrol the complete course again.
