Course Description

The aim of this course is improvement of presentation, communication and writing skills of students by providing an opportunity to discuss their ongoing work and interests with others. Students work in smaller groups on recent developments in the field of electrical engineering and information technology or computing. Each student will be required to select one topic to research and present, from the list provided on the first day of class.

General Competencies

Students independently explore current topics from the profession and science. In doing so, they should develop and improve the skills required for collecting and evaluating the necessary literature, preparation of technical text based on the publishing standards in professional and scientific publications and present their work and knowledge gained to the larger group of people consisting of students and teacher. Students, as part of this course, develop critical assessment of others' work.

  3. describe and summarize given topic in front of group of students
  4. estimate and critically evaluate quality of presentations of other students
  5. prepare report in accordance with publishing standards in professional and scientific publications
  6. apply gained knowledge of communication skills for public presentation of a given topic

Forms of Teaching

Lectures

Introductory lectures are given by mentors at the beginning of the semester to present possible Seminar topics to the interested students. Each student presents hers/his work in front of the presentation group in the last weeks of semester. Each student participates in active discussions about the presented topic after presentation.

Seminars

Topic of the seminar is defined through students' consultations with their mentor. Students submit the draft version of the seminar for approval by the mentor. After approval, students prepare the written report on the chosen topic together with the corresponding presentation. After these documents are approved by mentor, students can publicly defend their work. Quality of the presentation will be assessed by the mentor and by students from presentation group.
