Biography
Božidar Filipović-Grčić was born in Sinj in 1983, where he completed elementary school and general gymnasium. He graduated in 2007 and obtained his doctorate in 2013 from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER) in Zagreb. Since 2007, he has been employed at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in Zagreb, at the Department of Energy and Power Systems.
In 2019, he was appointed as an assistant professor, and in 2023, he was promoted to the rank of associate professor in the scientific and teaching field.
In 2013, he was appointed as a research scientist, in 2017 as a senior research scientist, and in 2020 as a scientific advisor.
Since 2023, he has been the head of the High Voltage Laboratory (HVL) at FER and the technical manager for accredited laboratory activities related to high-voltage testing, measurement, and electromagnetic field calculation in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025, for which the laboratory is accredited by the Croatian Accreditation Agency. He is involved in the establishment and operation of the Atmospheric Lightning Laboratory (APPLY) at FER.
Since 2007, he has been involved in the scientific project "Environmental Protection Compliance in the High Voltage System" of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Croatia. Since 2014, he has been working on the scientific project "Development of Advanced High Voltage Systems Using New Information and Communication Technologies" funded by the Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ). Currently, he leads two scientific projects (EFRR-IRI II Decision-Making in Power System Management under Uncertainty Induced by Climate Change and HRZZ Career Development Project for Young Researchers - Training of New Doctors of Science). As a researcher, he is also involved in the EFFR STRIP project, focusing on the development of an expert system for measuring lightning strike parameters and protecting wind turbine blades to reduce failures and downtime.
His main areas of scientific research and professional work include high-voltage engineering, high-voltage laboratory testing, electrical energy transmission, transient phenomena in power systems, electromagnetic compatibility, overvoltage protection, and insulation coordination. He is the author of numerous scientific and professional papers published in international journals and presented at scientific and professional conferences. He has been the leader of many industrial and scientific projects, reports, and studies, and he has authored measurement and test reports prepared in the High Voltage Laboratory at FER.
He has participated in lectures, lectures, and laboratory exercises for various courses in undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and specialist studies, including subjects like "High Voltage Engineering," "Overvoltage Protection," "Electromagnetic Transients and Electromagnetic Compatibility," "Laboratory of Power Engineering 2," "Transmission and Distribution of Electrical Energy," "Numerical Methods in Power Engineering," "Power Systems 1," "High Voltage Engineering and Electromagnetic Compatibility," "Testing and Measurement Methods in High-Voltage Engineering," "Electromagnetic Transient Phenomena in Power Systems,", "Transformers in Power Systems," and "Transformer Testing."
He is a reviewer for journals such as "Electric Power Systems Research," "International Journal of Electric Power & Energy Systems," and "IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery." He has reviewed numerous papers in journals and at international scientific conferences and has given numerous invited and public lectures at scientific conferences. On several occasions, he has served as a guest editor for special issues in international journals, including Electric Power Systems Research and the Journal of Energy. He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Energy and journal Electrical Engineering (Springer).
He has been a member of the organizing and technical committees of the International Conference on Power Systems Transients (IPST), held in 2015 in Cavtat and in 2017 in Seoul, 2021 in Belo Horizonte (Brazil), and 2023 in Thessaloniki (Greece).
He is a member of IEEE and CIGRÉ, where he is a member of study committees A3 - High Voltage Equipment and C4 - Technical Features of the Power System (international member). He is also a member of the CIGRÉ SEERC WG-02 working group "Regional Perspective of Shunt Reactor Introduction in the Transmission System." He has participated in the work of several international CIGRÉ working groups focusing on overvoltages, measurement systems, and high-voltage equipment, including WG C4.45 (Measuring Techniques and Characteristics of Fast and Very Fast Transient Overvoltages in Substations and Converter Stations), WG A2.63 (Transformer Impulse Testing), WG C4.61 (Lightning Transient Sensing, Monitoring, and Application in Electric Power Systems), and WG C4.66 (New Concept for Analysis of Multiphase Back-Flashover Phenomena of Overhead Transmission Lines Due to Lightning).
